May 15, 2012 — Normally a day of celebration, Mother’s Day ended tragically for four new mothers in Chicago this year. \u00a0Tyshyra Hines, Alicia Goston, Bernadette Harris, and Ieshia Nelson, all in their early 20’s, were driving to Goston’s grandmother’s birthday party. \u00a0Three were close friends. \u00a0The fourth was dating one of their brothers. \u00a0Now six children are missing their mothers, because of a speeding car.<\/p>\n

Chicago PD has yet to officially determine the cause of the crash, which is still under investigation. According to a statement from the police department, however, the women were driving at a “high rate of speed.” \u00a0At 11:55 PM, five minutes before Mother’s Day officially started, the car crashed into a utility pole. Onlookers said the car split in two.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, accidents like these could be prevented.\u00a0Speed limits and accompanying signage are in place to keep drivers (and pedestrians) safe from tragedies like this. For the families and friends of the four young women, this was<\/a> “the worst Mother’s Day in the world.”<\/p>\n
