{"id":1957,"date":"2012-08-06T15:36:17","date_gmt":"2012-08-06T19:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/parkingsigns.net\/?p=1957"},"modified":"2024-05-31T03:10:00","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T07:10:00","slug":"teen-safety-no-texting-while-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com/blog\/teen-safety-no-texting-while-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen&#8217;s Near Death Inspires No Texting While Driving Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8bZFmkkyEBg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Teen texts about No Texting and Driving before driving off a cliff (via <a href=\"https:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2012\/08\/05\/man-texts-about-needing-to-stop-texting-then-drives-off-a-cliff\/\">Time<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>August 6, 2012 &#8212; Moments before Chance Bothe <a href=\"https:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2012\/08\/05\/man-texts-about-needing-to-stop-texting-then-drives-off-a-cliff\/\">drove off of a cliff<\/a>,\u00a0he texted: \u201cI need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident.\u201d Irony aside, Bothe\u2019s accident highlights the serious dangers of texting while driving.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Bothe, a 21-year old Texas college student, was severely injured: he suffering a broken neck, a crushed face, a fractured skull, and traumatic brain injuries.\u00a0 The extent of his life-threatening injuries was such that doctors had to bring Bothe back to life three times.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-1-7.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1958\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1958\" title=\"Don't Text While Driving sign\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-1-7.gif\" alt=\"No Texting and Driving sign (It's the law!) from SmartSign\" width=\"271\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Signs like these remind drivers to quit texting and driving .<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After a painful, six-month recovery in which Bothe learned how to speak again, the teen believes God has saved him for a higher purpose. \u00a0He has since dedicated his life to spreading awareness about texting and driving.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2009 report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/risky-driving\/distracted-driving\">Distraction.gov<\/a>, 5,474 people were killed in distracted driving crashes, and another 448,000 injured.\u00a0 Moreover, texting delays drivers\u2019 response time even more than drinking does.<\/p>\n<p>Bothe joins countless others in the battle against texting and driving. Similar to the way drunk driving awareness campaigns have helped educate drivers, individuals are trying to achieve the same results with no texting and driving. These groups rely on market-based initiatives such as handing out fliers, blogging, amending drivers\u2019 education courses, or posting street signs to remind drivers to quit texting while driving.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-2-8.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1959\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1959\" title=\"Cell phone use prohibited\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-2-8.gif\" alt=\"Drive smart sign from SmartSign\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Some states have banned all handheld cellphone use while driving in an effort to counter texting while driving<\/em> .<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on the enforcement front, 39 states have banned texting and driving. 10 states have prohibited all handheld cell phone use altogether. In addition to implementing bans, states have increased the fines for texting and driving, making \u00a0the violation a primary offense. \u00a0In other words, officers can pull over and ticket drivers without there being any other traffic violation taking place.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-3-6.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1964\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1964\" title=\"Don't Text and Drive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Image-3-6.gif\" alt=\"No texting and driving sign, from Myparkingsign\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Alert drivers to the consequences of texting while driving \u2013 a serious car accident (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/no-cell-phone-signs\/dont-text-and-drive-sign\/sku-k-7304\">MyParkingSign<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bothe\u2019s unfortunate accident has brought more attention to the ongoing nationwide debate, and has added much-needed fuel to no texting and driving awareness campaigns. Sad as it may seem that it takes an accident or tragedy to change people&#8217;s minds, it can serve as a important lesson to all those who text while driving, namely, not to do it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; N.
