According to his findings, installation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctls.uconn.edu\/new-york-takes-steps-to-divide-bike-lanes-from-streets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">parking area dividers<\/a> between bike lanes and the main street stopped heavy vehicles from parking in illegal areas and kept bicycles in the designated lanes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"Bike-Corrals-NYC\" alt=\"Bike corrals\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8470\/8136677185_2e88547948.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bike corrals in NYC (Image by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bikeportland\/8136677185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BikePortland.org<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new bike corrals in New York City are a materialization of his findings. The newly installed bike corrals will \u201cprovide parking for bike-share bikes, and divide the street from bike lanes.\u201d [Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctls.uconn.edu\/new-york-takes-steps-to-divide-bike-lanes-from-streets.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">CTLS<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Atlantic Cities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/commute\/2013\/04\/new-york-tries-out-bike-parking-corrals-protect-separated-bike-lanes\/5331\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>, &#8220;In the Manhattan neighborhood of Hell\u2019s Kitchen, bike parking corrals, rather than parked cars, are being used to protect bike lanes.\u00a0Three new corrals were just installed alongside the bike lane on Ninth Avenue in response to community requests for more bike parking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen bike parking corrals replace a single car parking spot on Ninth Avenue in the floating lane that separates the bike lane from car traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The video produced by Streetfilms, shows that\u00a0&#8220;both cyclists and local business owners love the new parking oasis because it protects the cyclists, is convenient for customers and delivery people, and frees up space on the sidewalks for pedestrians, brings bikes in the floating bike lanes and looks more organized.&#8221;\u00a0(Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontostandard.com\/article\/new-york-introduces-bike-parking-corrals-that-protect-bike-lanes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">torontostandard.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/64205368?title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0&#038;color=9086c0&#038;js_api=1&#038;js_swf_id=vimeo_player\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>9th Avenue is a densely populated part of the city where many bikes lock up on the sidewalk rack. A corral with enough space to park 16 bikes can free up the sidewalks for pedestrians.\u00a0 The area is also famous for its restaurants, many of which have large fleets of delivery cyclists.<\/p>\n<p>Although parking spots for cars have been turned into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myparkingsign.com\/mps\/bicycle-parking-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bike parking<\/a> spaces in many cities, including New York, it is the first time that bike parking in a floating lane is being used to protect bikes from traffic.<i> &#8220;<\/i>Having bike parking replacing a car parking spot in the floating lane is definitely a first for New York City, and quite possibly the first in the United States.&#8221; Clarence Eckerson Jr., Streetfilms producer writes in his blog.
