When it comes to signs, people often think of them as methods to control traffic. We are bombarded with signs as soon as we step outside of our homes. Almost everywhere we look, these signs are meant for the traffic-whether vehicular or pedestrian.
Since times have changed, the purpose of signs has changed too. Signs are no longer restricted to the public road and go beyond the purview of administering traffic. Signs today are also used for advertising safety, policies and important initiatives taken by an individual, group or organization that installs the sign.
Some of the signs that can be used to promote safe behavior are shown below-
A standard pedestrian crossing sign indicates the point of the road where pedestrians can cross the street. However, a typical sign might not do enough to encourage caution while crossing the street, since that message is not conveyed in the sign directly.
However, the sign (above) directly sends across the message of crossing the street carefully to the public. A clever sign like this is not only memorable but also encourages compliance.
Research shows how drugs, guns and alcohol use have affected schools. Almost 30% of 10th graders have tried illicit drugs in the last year. Twelve percent of students, or about one out of eight, reported that they have been personally victimized at school during the current school year.
Schools are concerned with much more than traffic moving in and out of the lot. Signs like these (shown above) reinforce security policies and important health initiatives.
 The sign is a humble message to all motorists driving near a school zone, playground and campground etc to drive slowly and carefully. While conventional school signs do their job just fine, they are meant to control the speed limit of the traffic moving around. Signs with a direct message grab attention instantly and encourage safe driving behavior among motorists.
 Signs like these are ideal for educational institutions like schools and colleges. Not only do they welcome visitors but also promote the policies of the institution. The sign (above) is a pleasant change from the standard no-smoking sign and gets the message across just as well.
 Seatbelt Signs are usually found on public roads to remind drivers to buckle up. The sign wants to ensure that motorists remain safe should there be a frontal or rear collision. Buckle-up Signs can also be placed at parking lots and private driveways to call attention of the drivers to use seatbelts before they enter the main road. Signs like these (shown above) are not demanding in their message but are thoughtful and original.
