Accessible Parking Signs

The difference is entirely based on the parking space dimensions, particularly the access aisle width, which the sign designates. A standard ADA parking sign marks a regular accessible space with a minimum 5-foot access aisle. A van accessible sign designates a space with a wider, minimum 8-foot access aisle required to accommodate wheelchair-accessible van ramps or lifts. Van accessible spaces are critical for individuals with mobility devices and are mandated by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

For optimal visibility and to meet accessibility guidelines, accessible parking signs should be installed so that the bottom edge of the sign panel is a minimum of 60 inches (5 feet) above the finish floor or ground surface. This height ensures the sign is easily visible to drivers approaching the parking space and is not obstructed by parked vehicles or snow accumulation.
