Frequently Asked Questions

A.

The octagon is unique to the stop sign so drivers recognize it instantly — even from behind, or when snow or dirt covers the word "STOP." When U.S. sign shapes were standardized in the 1920s, the rule of thumb was the more sides a sign has, the greater the hazard, so the eight-sided octagon was reserved for the most important "come to a full stop" message. Our Official MUTCD Stop Sign (R1-1) keeps that standard shape.

A.

Come to a full stop, then yield to any pedestrians in the crosswalk and to cross traffic that's already in or approaching the intersection. Proceed only when the way is clear. At a two-way stop, traffic on the cross street does not stop, so you must wait for a safe gap before entering.

A.

The driver who reaches the intersection and stops first goes first. If two arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has the right-of-way, and a driver going straight generally goes before one turning across traffic. When in doubt, yield — a clear wave-through beats two cars lurching at once. An ALL WAY plaque below each stop sign marks an all-way stop.

A.

A stop sign requires a full stop every time, then yielding before you proceed. A yield sign requires you to slow down and give way to traffic and pedestrians, stopping only if necessary to avoid a conflict. Stop is the stronger control, used where a full stop is always needed; yield is used where merging traffic can often continue safely.

A.

Traffic authorities choose the control based on MUTCD warrants. Stop signs suit lower-volume intersections; a signal is considered when traffic volumes, pedestrian activity, or crash patterns justify it. A multi-way (all-way) stop has its own criteria in MUTCD Section 2B.07 — minimum traffic volumes, crash history, or the need to balance conflicting flows. Notably, the MUTCD says a stop sign shall not be installed to slow speeders.

A.

On conventional roads, the minimum size according to the MUTCD is 30 inches by 30 inches. On multi-lane or higher-speed roads, it is 36 inches by 36 inches, with a maximum of 48 inches on freeways. A size of 24 inches applies only to private or low-volume roads. The bottom of the sign should be mounted about 7 feet above the ground in urban areas and 5 feet above the ground in rural areas. Our official MUTCD stop sign is available in all standard sizes and has pre-drilled holes.

A.

Treat the intersection as a stop and proceed with caution even if the sign is down — the legal requirement to stop usually still stands. Report a faded, bent, blocked, or missing sign on a public road to your city or county traffic department, including the location so that they can fix it fast. On private property, you can replace it yourself with a new R1-1 sign; if a curve or foliage hides a sign, add a Stop Ahead sign.

A.

Largely yes — under the international Vienna Convention, most countries use the same red octagon reading "STOP," sometimes in the local language, so the shape reads the same worldwide. Penalties for running one vary by state and country but typically mean a fine plus license points, and more where a crash or school zone is involved. For a public road, that's set by your local authority; on private property, you control access with custom or standard signs — call our sales team at 888-343-3771 (Mon – Fri, 8:00am to 7:00pm EST) or email customerservice@smartsign.com for a bulk quote.

About our Stop Signs For Sale

We produce stop signs, including the MUTCD R1-1 red octagon which legally requires all drivers to come to a complete stop. We also offer related types such as all-way plaques, portable and handheld versions, and stop-ahead warnings. Since a stop sign is a regulatory sign, its octagonal shape and red colour are reserved for this single message so drivers recognize it instantly, even from behind or through snow. This immediate recognition makes the stop sign key to ensuring safety at intersections on public streets, private roads, parking lots, and work zones.
